74/2238 [America]. Washington, G. (1732-1799). SIGNATURE, pen and ink, on a printed lottery ticket for the Mountain Road Lottery, 9x14 cm., numb. "355" in pen and ink, dated 1768.

- Formerly torn into 3 or 4 pieces (just affecting the lower part of the g in Washington's signature) but neatly reassembled, doubled w. paper and laid down on a piece of stiff paper; lacks lower left blank corner and sm. portion of letterpress text.

= The Mountain Road Lottery was conceived by, among others, George Washington in order to collect funds for the construction of a road through the Allegheny Mountains in Virginia. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LII.
