- Possibly lacking 9 plates, but the few copies we traced all contained a different number of plates (see the note below); 1 engraving cut short in outer margin; 3 engravings without blank margins and mounted/ tipped in; occas. sl. fingersoiled and a few other minor defects (i.a. lacking ties). Professionally restored copy, recased with new endpapers and new head- and tailband.
= Atlas van Stolk 1027 (33 engravings numbered 13-46) and listing 1 variant copy with sl. different contents; F.M. 1285B (10 plates); not in Simoni. Extremely rare suite of engravings, only 2 copies of this edition in NCC (with engr. title and 43 plates and with 30 plates). The NCC also lists 2 copies of an edition published in Leyden, 1616, each with (7) textpages and 40 engr. plates. The title states that the engravings are specifically intended to be used as illustrations for entries in Alba Amicorum, or even the entire booklet itself could be used as such which explains why it was interleaved with blanks (as in other copies and similar suites we traced). Compared with the copy listed by the Atlas van Stolk, the engravings 16, 17, 20, 21, 29 and 43 are lacking. Our copy is more similar to the variant copy listed by the Atlas van Stolk (lacking plates 20, 21, 29, 36, 37 and 39): both have extra plates (i.a. depicting the Academy building, the anatomical theatre and the hortus botanicus in Leyden) and plate 22 ("ijsschuitje") is without caption and newly engraved in both copies. Finally, a plate showing the fishmarket in Amsterdam (?) is present both in the variant copy and our copy. The very fine engravings show i.a. profiles of Amsterdam and Leyden and daily subjects such as a company of men and women having fun in the streets at night, a quartet playing a serenade in front of a house, a sailing cart, skating scenes, quarrelling peasants, travellers, and the construction of ships and houses. "De plaatjes die hierin voorkomen en volgens den titel konden dienen om alba amicorum te versieren, zijn even zeldzaam als eigenaardig en verdienen nadere vermelding, daar zeker zelden een dergelijke suite voorkomt." (Atlas van Stolk). SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE CXXXI.
