6427 - 6643 FINE ARTS - 16th-19th CENTURY DRAWINGS, WATERCOLOURS and PAINTINGS
= Design for an illustration for an unidentified work.
AND 2 similar drawings by the same: "Een misstap is spoedig begaan" and a woman holding onto a rope and supported by a man.
- (Finger)soiled, mostly in margins; occas. w. waterstain in margins.
= A very interesting document by the apothecary and amateur artist Hendrik van Oostveen. The annotations mention the title of each work given by the artist, the sizes and to the buyers and price. I.a. a painting of a hermit ("Verkocht aan de loterij der tentoonstelling te Zwolle f40,00" (no.184 of Lijst der schilder- en kunstwerken, door nog in leven zijnde Nederlandsche meesters vervaardigd, welke zijn toegelaten tot de tentoonstelling te Zwolle van den jare 1842. Cf. RKD).
- Both drawings trimmed to the framing line.
AND 2 similar by the same, showing the demolition of the Zijlklooster and a view of the Popelingstraat.
= Provenance: the collection A.M. van den Broek, with his collector's marks and annotation on verso.
= Pannebakker apparently made more than one version of the second view. The Noord-Hollands Archief also holds a version of this drawing (inv. no. 41508). Provenance: the collection A.M. van den Broek, occas. with his collector's mark or annotation on verso. The Zijlklooster was demolished in 1818.
= With the collector's mark of J.Q. van Regteren Altena on verso (Lugt 4617).
AND 4 other drawings, all from the same collection, incl. 2 pencil drawings
attributed to Jan EKELS and an anonymous pencil drawing (A woman carrying a basket, a child standing beside her).
- Sl. browned and fingersoiled; one drawing w. very sm. section torn off of upper right corner.
= Views by this amateur artist are very similar to the compositions by Abraham Rademaker but there are some significant differences. Somewhat naive but charming drawings. The Noord-Hollands archief holds a similar drawing by the same, depicting the Grote Houtpoort and the RKD mentions a drawing by the same of De Grote Markt, sold at auction a few times (first in 1754, auction Jan van der Vinne). Provenance: the collection A.M. van den Broek, with his collector's mark on verso.
- Varnish renewed; several (vague) horizontal dents.
= According to a label on verso of the frame this painting is by Godefridus Schalcken himself (and signed in upper right corner), with a provenance leading back to the collection Goudstikker. Paneel. Fraai." (RKD: fichescollectie Cornelis Hofstede de Groot, no. 1483922) and Mak van Waay 12/15-12-1950, lot 75: "Koning Saul bij de waarzegster te Endor (...). Geparqueteerd paneel. H.74, B.97. Getekend." (RKD: fichescollectie Cornelis Hofstede de Groot, no. 1483921). Not mentioned in C. Hofstede de Groot, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of the Most Eminent Dutch Painters of the Seventeenth century Based on the work of John Smith (London, 1913). SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE CVII.
- Yellowed.
= With annot. by Van den Broek on verso: "Door Pieter Scheen te 's Gravenhage echte Schelfhout bevonden." Provenance: the collection A.M. van den Broek.
