Bélidor was the first to use differential and integral equations for the solution of hydrotechnical problems. The work remained the standard authority on practical water engineering long after most of the techniques it describes became obsolete.

= ''Paul Ehrenfest (1880-1933) (...) studied theoretical physics at Vienna, where he received his doctorate in 1904 for a dissertation on the extension of Hertz's mechanics to problems in hydrodynamics.
