= Cf. Kainbacher I, p.15; Howgego B10. Account of Samuel Baker's exploration of the source of the Nile, which led to the discovery of Lake Albert in 1863. The expedition was full of hardship. "A mutiny had to be quelled, the baggage animals died, forcing the Bakers to ride oxen, and food supplies dwindled, reducing them to eating grass. Fever often laid them low for weeks on end, their guides deceived them and hippopotami overturned their boats" (Howgego).

= Clapperton (1788-1827), Scottish Africa explorer. On his last journey he tried to discover the source of the river Niger. During this exploration he died of dysentery in Sokoto. His fellow traveler Lander completed the journey and brought home the diaries of Clapperton. In 1830 Lander found the solution to the Niger-question of Clapperton. The appendix comprises i.a. a list of words of "Yourribaansche taal" and "taal der Fellatahs". Not in Tiele; Henze I, 570; Howgego II, C34; cf. Gay 337; cf. Kainbacher I, p.35.
