- Creases and w. waterstains; frayed; margins cut short, w. loss of image; left and right edge repaired w. translucent paper strip; tear in lower right corner.

= Despite defects a very rare and interesting print, perhaps after the engraving by Nicolo Nelli (cf. the copy in the British Museum). Our print shows 43 numbered allegories of discord with Italian captions, more than the engraving by Nelli. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE CXXIX.

- Left margin restored/ strengthened.

= Very delicate and rare print. Peter Overadt started business as a publisher of decorated topographical maps, filling the gap left by Frans Hogenberg's death in 1590. After 1600 he shifted towards the manufacture of religious prints with a Catholic orientation. He is sometimes identified as the engraver of anonymous sheets under his imprint. - On paper w. fleur de lis watermark; small brown stain in upper margin masqued by mounted piece of paper; otherwise trifle speckled.

= Nice portrait of a man with his wig on the side of his head, holding up a glass of wine and holding a smoking pipe. "Do but vein this Glass of Claret, how invitingly it looks; Drink it quickly or you'll mar it (...)."

Faber II, J. (±1684-1756). (Portrait of Benjamin Bradley, tobacconist). Mezzotint after A. POND, 35x25 cm., captions and a small vignette (showing a smoking woman and smoking lion) below the image, publ. 1737.

- Trimmed to the image and captions; trifle rubbed.

= "Behold the Man, who, when a gloomy Band of Vile Excisemen threaten'd all the Land, Help'd to deliver from their Harpy-Gripe The chearfull Bottle and the social Pipe". This portrait of tobacconist Benjamin Bradley alludes to the triumph of the tobacco trade in the defeat of Sir Robert Walpole's scheme for subjecting tobacco, and wine, to the duties of excise in 1732.
