= The first series of plates published by Austen Henry Layard after his first expedition to the ruins of Nimrud and the Kuyunjik (near Mosul) (a second series with 71 plates was published 4 years later). Layard was fascinated by the ruins that he saw during his travel through the Turkey and Syria and, when on his way to Ceylon to work as a lawyer, his fascination got the better of him. When he his decision had been made to start excavating and he had found enough financial support to do so, he, as he wrote afterwards (...) slept little during the night. The hovel in which we had taken shelter, and its inmates, did not invite my slumber; but such scenes and companions were not new to me: they could have been forgotten, had my brain been less excited. Hopes, long cherished, were now to be realised, or were to end in disappointment. Visions of palaces under-ground, of gigantic monsters, of sculptured figures, and endless inscriptions floated before me. (...) I fancied myself wandering in a maze of chambers from which I could find no outlet. Then again, all was reburied, and I was standing on the grass-covered mound. To illustrate the impressive remains of what was once the greatest and most powerful civilization of its time, he published the present series of large plates. They show in detail the fabulous carvings and sculptures made by the Assyrians and together with his first publication on these excavations (Nineveh and its Remains (...), London 1848-1849), they brought him great fame in England. Many of the great finds were transported to Great Britain and remain in the British Museum. Abbey, Travel 364; Atabey 686. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE IV.
