= A very rich album in a copy of Paradin's Les devises heroiques (ed. 1561, Antwerp) with elaborately painted coats of arms of Dutch and French families. One of the earliest known Dutch alba amicorum, with contributions by i.a. Janus Dousa (dated 1564), Johan van Mathenesse (2x), Johannes Palant, Remmer Benigha de Grimersum, Reinherus à Dortt(?), Henricus de Steenbergen, Hen. a Briemen, Lucas Fruterius, Hadrianus à Reede, Johannes W. Honburgensis (Genua), Johannes van Schagen and Georgius de Renesse. It was common in 16th century Netherlands to use emblem-books as alba amicorum. "Students in the Low Countries, in particular, soon became familiar with the practice of keeping an album as part of their 'peregrinatio academica'. They would either matriculate at German universities or meet German students while studying at Louvain, or even join one of the German Nations, flourishing at the Italian and French universities, in Orleans and Bourges in particular." (Alba amicorum, vijf eeuwen op papier gezet: het album amicorum en het poëziealbum in de Nederlanden, p.170). W. Klose, Corpus Alborum Amicorum, 63.MUI.ZEN; Alba amicorum. Vijf eeuwen vriendschap op papier gezet, 1990, no.2. Provenance: Sotheby's, London, 1937, no.107 (The Mensing Library, 2nd and final portion). SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE CXXII.

67/2524 [Alba amicorum]. Album amicorum of CORNELIS BUYS, mainly Leyden and the Hague, 1573-1631, 68 (incl. 36 blank) lvs., comprising 33 contributions incl. 26 gouaches of coats of arms heightened w. gold and silver and 4 drawings (pen, ink and gouache), later hvellum w. endpapers heightened w. gold.

- Bookplate of E.A. van Beresteyn and sm. ticket "Familie-archief van Beresteyn" on frontcover. Small auction ticket "Veiling Rambonnet bij RWP de Vries" on upper pastedown.

= An album amicorum with a curious history. The present leaves once belonged to the album amicorum of Cornelis Buys (1559-1632). Although the present collection of entries is sumptuous with contributions of exceptional quality, the album in its orginal state must have been an impressive sight. It was probably dismembered and the leaves subsequently were sold separately. The leaves in this album were carefully rebound and interleaved. The quality of the gouaches of the coats of arms is unrivalled and a rich demonstration of the art of the alba amicorum at its height. It is apparent that Cornelis Buys treasured his album because he collected contributions for over 40 years. Currently the University Library of Amsterdam keeps 24 leaves, the Royal Library keeps 5 leaves, the Leyden University keeps approx. 6 leaves and an unknown number of leaves reside in the British Library.
