Hyakunin isshu zuko, ogura no nishiki (Designs inspired by the Hyakunin Isshu, Brokade of Ogura).
Kyoto, Unsôdô, 1935-1937, 5 vols., each w. 20 double-p. col. woodcut designs w. silver and gold details, no pagination, orig. unif. leporello w. silk on boards and mounted title, sm. folio.
- Heavily foxed, but particularly in the margins; some designs sl. dam. on the middle fold. Covers soiled and worn along boardedges.
= Each of these striking designs is inspired by one of the 100 poems of the Hyakunin isshu ("One hundred people, one verse"), famously compiled by Fujiwara no Teika (1162-1241) when he stayed in Ogura (near Kyoto). The poems are annotated at the end of each volume by Sasaki Nobutsuna, a poet and scholar of Nara- and Heian-period literature, whose work was supposedly the inspiration for Iida Shikô to create these designs.
