Voor de beschavingsgeschiedenis heeft het werk groot belang, omdat de schrijver meer geeft dan recht: hij vermeldt ook rechtstoepassing en maakt gewag van sociale toestanden, gebreken en misdadige verschijnselen in zijn tijd. Maar vooral ligt zijn beteekenis in den grooten invloed, die van zijn werk is uitgegaan op de rechtsstudie en de rechtstoepassing (...). Nog steeds is het de groote bron, waaruit de beoefenaar van de rechtsgeschiedenis put om theorie en practijk van het strafrecht in het midden der 16de eeuw te leeren kennen."
